Running a gas fireplace costs more per unit of heat than running a gas furnace: at the January to March 2026 EIA average of $1.46 per therm, a 96 percent furnace delivers heat for about $1.52 per therm burned while a typical direct vent fireplace at 70 percent efficiency delivers the same heat for about $2.09. The fireplace still wins one specific fight: heating the one room you are actually in while the furnace idles at a lower setting. Here is the math for both cases.
The per-hour numbers
A gas fireplace burning 30,000 BTU per hour uses 0.3 therms, which is about 44 cents an hour at the 2026 average gas price. A typical 80,000 BTU furnace burns about $1.17 of gas per hour of actual run time, but it cycles on and off and it heats the whole house, not one room.
Those two numbers are not comparable until you account for efficiency and for how much house you are heating. That is where the furnace pulls ahead.
Cost per unit of delivered heat
Delivered heat is what matters, and the furnace converts more of each therm into warm air in the house. Here is what a million BTU of heat into the room costs at $1.46 per therm, the EIA residential average for January to March 2026.
| Appliance | Typical efficiency | Cost per million BTU delivered |
|---|---|---|
| Condensing gas furnace | 96% | $15.20 |
| Standard gas furnace | 80% | $18.25 |
| Vent free gas fireplace | 99% | $14.75 |
| Direct vent gas fireplace | 70% | $20.85 |
| B vent gas fireplace | 50% | $29.20 |
| Decorative vented log set | 20% | $73.00 |
Read the last row twice. A decorative vented log set sends most of its heat up the chimney, and burning one for warmth costs roughly four times what the furnace charges for the same heat. Log sets are for looks. Our vented vs ventless gas logs guide covers why.
When the fireplace is actually cheaper
Zone heating is the one case the fireplace wins. If you spend the evening in one room, drop the furnace thermostat several degrees and run the fireplace where you sit. Four hours on a 30,000 BTU direct vent unit costs about $1.75 in gas at 2026 rates, and the furnace setback across the whole house typically saves more than that on a cold night.
The fireplace loses the moment you ask it to do the furnace’s job. Heating a whole house through one room means the fireplace runs constantly at a worse efficiency while the rest of the house stays cold. If whole house numbers are what you want, run your own fuels and rates through our heating cost calculator, it ranks six appliances by cost per delivered BTU.
Three things that change the answer
First, your gas rate. The $1.46 average hides a wide spread by state, so pull the therm price off your own bill and scale the table.
Second, your fireplace type. A vent free unit turns nearly every therm into room heat and actually beats the furnace per BTU, though it carries the moisture and air quality tradeoffs covered in our ventless safety guide. A direct vent unit lands around 70 percent, and a B vent closer to 50.
Third, your furnace age. An old 80 percent furnace against a good direct vent fireplace is a much closer race than the table suggests, and electric rates barely matter here: the fireplace blower draws about as much as a light bulb.
How we ran these numbers
We built this from the EIA residential natural gas price for January to March 2026 and standard efficiency ranges for each appliance class, the same inputs behind our heating cost calculator. No fireplace maker sponsored the math. The Fireplace Costs hub has the full cost series, including what a gas fireplace costs to install in the first place.
Gas fireplace vs furnace FAQ
Is it cheaper to run a gas fireplace or the furnace?
The furnace, per unit of heat: a 96 percent furnace delivers heat about 25 percent cheaper than a 70 percent direct vent fireplace at 2026 gas rates. The fireplace only wins as zone heat for one room while the furnace is set back.
How much gas does a gas fireplace use per hour?
A typical 30,000 BTU unit burns 0.3 therms per hour, about 44 cents at the early 2026 EIA average of $1.46 per therm. Smaller 20,000 BTU units run near 29 cents, large 40,000 BTU units near 58 cents.
Can a gas fireplace heat a whole house?
Not economically. It heats the room it sits in and adjacent space, and pushing it to cover a whole house costs more than the furnace doing the same job. Treat it as zone heat.
Should I turn down my furnace and use the fireplace at night?
If you are in one room for the evening, yes, that combination usually saves money. Running the fireplace on top of an unchanged furnace setting just adds 44 cents an hour to the bill.
Is a decorative gas log set expensive to run?
For heat, yes: at roughly 20 percent efficiency it costs about four times what a furnace charges per delivered BTU at 2026 rates. Run it for looks and let the furnace do the heating.
