Direct vent is the right answer for most people, and here is the whole comparison in three sentences. A direct vent gas fireplace is sealed: it breathes outside air through one channel of a two-wall pipe and exhausts through the other, runs 70 to 85 percent efficient, and can vent sideways through a wall. A B-vent fireplace burns your room’s air, must vent vertically through the roof, and sends much of its heat up with the exhaust at around 50 percent efficiency. B-vent survives on lower unit prices and a taller, more open flame.

How does a direct vent fireplace work?
Through one coaxial pipe doing two jobs: the outer ring pulls combustion air in from outside, the inner pipe pushes exhaust out. The firebox is sealed behind glass, so the fire never touches your indoor air at all. No air gets stolen from the room, no combustion products can enter it, and the sealed box is why direct vent units hit 70 to 85 percent efficiency.
The practical superpower is horizontal venting. A direct vent fireplace can sit on almost any exterior wall and vent straight out behind itself, which is why they go into rooms that never had a chimney and never will. How does a B-vent fireplace work?
Like a tame open fireplace. It draws combustion air from the room, burns it in a partially open firebox, and sends the exhaust up a single-wall pipe through the roof, with a draft hood mixing in room air along the way. That open design is why the flame looks taller and more natural than the fire behind direct vent glass, and it is also where the heat goes: a large share of the warmth, plus the room air the fire consumed, leaves through the roof.
B-vent’s other constraint is the vertical run. No chimney chase or roof access above the fireplace location, no B-vent. That alone removes it from most remodel conversations.
Which one heats better?
Direct vent, decisively. Sealed combustion keeps the heat transfer inside the room envelope, and a mid-size direct vent unit delivers more usable warmth than a large B-vent. Worse, a B-vent unit burning hard on a cold night is consuming already-heated room air as combustion air, some of your furnace’s work goes up the pipe with it. Which is safer?
Both are safe installed to code, but direct vent has fewer failure paths. A sealed system cannot spill exhaust into the room or backdraft when a range hood and a tight house fight over air. B-vent relies on natural draft, and strong downdrafts or house depressurization can push combustion products past the draft hood. Modern B-vent units carry spill switches for exactly that event, and a CO detector on the floor is non-negotiable with any open-combustion gas appliance, guidance the CSIA repeats every season.
So why does B-vent still exist?
Three honest reasons. The flame: open or lightly screened, tall and yellow, the closest gas gets to a wood fire’s presence, and some buyers genuinely prefer it to any fire behind glass. The price: units run $500 to $2,000 less than comparable direct vent. And replacement logic: a house with an existing B-vent chase can take a new B-vent unit with minimal work, while converting the chase to direct vent costs more.

Direct vent for anyone adding a gas fireplace to a room without a chimney, anyone heating with the fireplace, tight modern construction, and anyone who wants the annual service to be the only thought the venting ever requires.
B-vent for replacing an existing B-vent unit in its chase, or for the buyer who has seen both flames side by side, wants the open one, accepts the efficiency penalty, and treats the fireplace as ambiance rather than heat. Direct vent vs B-vent FAQ
Can you convert a B-vent fireplace to direct vent?
Not the unit itself, you replace it. The existing chase can often host the new direct vent pipe, which keeps the project closer to a swap than a rebuild. Quote it both ways before deciding.
Does a direct vent fireplace need electricity?
The blower and most remotes do, but many models use a millivolt or battery-backed ignition that keeps the burner working in an outage. Check the spec sheet if storm heat is part of your plan.
Can direct vent pipes run through any wall?
Any exterior wall that satisfies the clearance rules around the termination cap, windows, doors, and soffits. The manual’s termination diagram decides the exact spot, not the installer’s convenience.
Is ventless better than either of these?

How do I tell which type I already have?
