How this calculator does the math
It starts at 20 BTU per square foot, the sizing baseline the hearth industry and HVAC quick guides share, then adjusts for three things. Ceilings above 8 feet add volume, so the number scales with height. Poor insulation adds 25 percent, good insulation takes 15 percent off. A very cold climate adds 20 percent, a hot one takes 15 percent off.
The result sizes heat for one room, which is what a fireplace is for. Whole-house sizing is a different job called a Manual J load calculation, and if a contractor is quoting you a furnace or heat pump, that is the number to ask for. How big of a room will an electric fireplace heat?
About 400 square feet, and every plug-in unit shares that ceiling. Plug-in electric fireplaces max out at 1,500 watts because that is what a standard outlet delivers, and 1,500 watts is about 5,100 BTU no matter what the box art promises. Infrared models claim up to 1,000 square feet, which holds only in the sense that infrared warms people and objects directly, so you feel warmer before the air does.
How big of a wood stove do I need for 1,200 square feet?
Around 24,000 to 32,000 BTU of steady output, which is a small to mid-size stove. In a cold climate with average insulation the calculator pushes that toward 30,000. Resist the urge to size up: a stove too big for its space gets run damped down, which smolders, wastes wood, and loads the flue with creosote.
When the math stops working
Three cases break any square-foot rule. Open floor plans let heat drift into space you did not count, so measure the whole connected area, not just where the couch sits. Drafty pre-war houses can need half again the calculated number. And stairwells pull warm air up and out of the room you are trying to heat.
Oversizing has its own cost. A gas fireplace too big for the room roasts you out, then short cycles on the thermostat, which is hard on the unit. Matching the number beats beating it.
